Seizing opportunities amid the monotonous: The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side!

Today one of my colleagues resigned! Not that it concerns me a bit that it would lead me into writing about it. But the turbulence that one event causes makes me want to analyze the effect an action of one person have on other people!

(This might be a start of a series, so here is the first one!)

The Grass is Always Greener on the Other Side

“I looked through others' windows
On an enchanted earth
But out of my own window--
solitude and dearth.

And yet there is a mystery
I cannot understand--
That others through my window
See an enchanted land.”
                                                 ― Jessie B. Rittenhouse

Ours is a small department of may be maximum 50 people working in small groups based on projects and field of technology. She and I have never worked together and we are mere acquaintances who exchange pleasantries whenever we cross each other! Today was a fine sunny morning. As I was getting into the routine of an office day, a friend of mine pings me. Like in any office, the gossips travel through the IP in the form of small window that pops up in the corner of your monitor almost invisible to others but only for your open eyes, saying, 'you have received a message'

Ah, the chat messages!

So, the friend pings, "so-and-so said that so-and-so has resigned!" (Of course the original message had names in here but don't want to disclose them here .so .no names here!) And I reply, 'oh' and then like a realization suddenly dawns on me, 'that’s why she had been studying so much lately!' Of course she had been and I do remember thinking to myself what she will do studying so much and now I know!

There, I was done. Good news. I mentally noted to congratulate her whenever... if ever we crossed paths!

But then, it was not done yet. How could it be? One among us was leaving. Probably for a Higher pay job. Probably for a better, technically challenging projects! How can that fact be digested, that someone among was going for a seemingly brighter future. It clearly had to shake some... awaken others... shock a few and motivate that one person into following the path shown by her! Recently two others had resigned and the pattern of aftermath was same. There was an unseen wave of turbulence in the air. Whispering around... small group discussions here and there and of course the one resigning would be the man of the day... today it’s the 'woman of the day'!

People will take turns to convey their regards in her achievement. Let’s be honest... it’s an achievement. Nobody is ever happy in any job where you have to be reporting to someone!

Except a few...!

And, that few change the whole game. That few make the whole difference in this world were people run after money and fame! Like my boss for instance, rather my ex-boss actually.  After my promotion we left that relation and now we are the co-workers!

She is one damn lady... one of a kind I would say. Not a natural type a more like made up type but whatever she is one person I know who can survive anywhere anyhow! So, that makes her one of a kind. It’s not that she doesn't ever become frustrated but even then she would find a roundabout for any problem that comes her way! Always finding ways to make things better 'for herself' under any circumstance! Nothing fazes her at least not evidently. People are always in awe of her.

Those are the kinds, I think who would survive and excel in any organization! The kind that any organization needs! Not the likes of us who work for our own pleasure but the ones that makes whatever comes their way their pleasure! I am sure she wasn’t like this but may be so much diligent that this routine became her! She has a plan mapped out ready for everything... each and every occasion... each and every idea... each and every day. They contend themselves by taking the day itself as a challenge and coursing through it with plan and determination. In the end of the day, it’s the likes of them who gets to sleep with a smile of contend at night and wake up next morning eager and full of energy to take up more challenges!

There's them... and then there’s another set of them... bickering and cribbing at every problem that comes their way. Totally disturbed when someone resigns because that, they think, is the only way out of the present problem... the problem of dissatisfaction in work... the problem of disagreement with the boss... the problem of discontent with salary and what not!

Let’s stop and think for a moment... what went wrong. May be everything is not bad yet. May be there's still a chance that this right here might be exactly what we need. May be it’s not the others... it’s us our selves who needs to change... change to accept the bitter TRUTH OF LIFE...

“Grass is greener at other people’s feet because they watered it. You need not to let your environment control you; you have what it takes to make it look beautiful!”
